In the November issue of Recording Magazine, Jon Bare gives a tongue-and-cheek rundown about de-humming a guitar during a recording session.  Hums (and buzzes) can be a reoccurring problem for musicians and recording engineers alike. 

Even in the best installed studios these problems can and do occur, but... The "but" is that they occur much less frequently in studios that have the equipment installed correctly.   Another source of hums and buzzes are cords that are in bad shape - either worn or never wired properly in the first place.
