 MAKING (it in) MUSIC

Recording Magazine Reader's Tip 1

BY ROBERT DENNIS

Making it in the field, involves knowing the field and therefore reading about and studying the field.  For the musician, 50% of the work is on actual music; things like creating it, performing it, recording it, etc...  The other part of your work will be in the business aspect of music, like booking it, copywriting it, promoting it, etc.  When you know what and how to do each of these aspects of success, you will most likely be successful.  A continuing education is necessary until you have mastered all of these aspects.

One of the first steps in a logical education in the field, is to have the continuing information supplied by a periodical (magazine).  I congratulate you on reading Recording Magazine to get your password for this tip.  Recording, in my opinion, is the best magazine for you, the recording musician.  I like how it provides article that are 1) quickly elevating recording skills, as well as 2) presenting the latest tools of the trade, and 3) educating you in some of the business aspects you'll need to master to be successful in music.  The "A&R Insider" column, hosted by Taxi gives you a edge in more than just recording skills but in making money with your music.  A Recording Magazine subscription costs less than $2.00 an issue, and you should maintain a subscription to this powerful tool.  I do.

Another step would be using the web to find out what is happening and how things are done in the recording and music industry.  There are free publications, like this one (www.recordingeq.com).  Here you will get free lessons on recording as well as dozens of articles and tips on recording, production and marketing of music.  The subscription is free, register here.

Samples of the kind of tips you will be able to access are here:

The other important step will be networking with other, like-minded, recording musicians.  A real good way to do this is through message boards which often have an association of musicians working on projects together via mail and e-mail.  For this kind of networking, I would send you to Recording Website which has a variety of different level message boards and a Subterranean "Club." - here's what they say about it:

About the SubT projects
The SubT cds are a way for folks of varied backgrounds, musical taste and abilities to come together and create something that is larger than themselves. It all starts on the The SubT Message Board. That's where we start cd's, talk about ones in progress and finish them up.  And once we have made one we like to talk about it to. For that we go to The SubT Comment Board.

So stay tuned for more of our monthly tips and fill out our feedback form to let us know what you would like covered by us.
