JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Associate Recording Engineer is the person thoroughly trained for the majority of starting positions in the music, audio and recording field. Associates often are the professional setup people for recording, and audio mixing in the studio or at concert performance venues. Associates also fill jobs in the areas of editing, audio duplication, and dialogue recording for commercials, videos and movies. Within about 5 years as a associate in the field, personnel often get promoted to recording engineer positions.

Basic Music Production Course

MEETINGS: 8 Classes - 5 hours each

COURSE PREREQUISITES: Successful completion of Basic Digital Recording Technologies Course

TRAINING DESCRIPTION:

Section 1 - Band Recording - 4 class meetings:

Students complete a mock session and learn about the console that they will be using during section 1. Students then complete the recording of one band production each week for 3 weeks. During this section, the student earns competencies at the various tasks necessary for band recording

Section 2 - Basic MIDI Production Techniques - 3 class meetings:

The students learn the basics of MIDI and sampling/looping. The students complete a basic MIDI production using samplers, drum machines and sequencers during class or (if additional time is needed) during lab periods.

Section 3 - Wrap Up - 1 class meeting:

Students use the last week of class to complete any remaining band recording competency or to complete their final MIDI Production project. A final examination will also be given during this last class.

Campus Practice/Study Time: Up to 16 hours of additional study or individual practice with instructor assistance may be scheduled by each student. Up to 2 additional 8-hour contact hour packages may be purchased at $99 each.

Introduction To Music Theory Course

MEETINGS: 8 Classes - 3 hours each

TRAINING DESCRIPTION:

Section 1 - Rhythm - 2 class meetings:

Students learn to identify the beat and measures and how these vary in different styles of music. Students learn basic note and rhythm symbols, meter signatures, accents. Students perform drills in meter signatures and common rhythm patterns.

Section 2 - Basic MIDI Programming - 2 class meetings

Student learn to use Vision^TMsoftware on a Mac Computer that will be used throughout the class for student assignments.

Section 3 - Pitch - 2 class meetings:

Students learn the Treble and Bass clefs and how to notate pitches on staves. Half step and whole step patterns for major and minor keys are learned. Students learn to recognize major and minor keys, study keys and key signatures.

Section 4 - Harmony - 2 class meetings:

Students learn the basics of intervals, consonance, dissonance and the basics of triad chords.

Campus Practice/Study Time: Up to 10 hours of additional study or individual practice with instructor assistance may be scheduled by each student.

Final Exam: Final examination will be given 7 days after the last class.
