IT SHURE IS A COLD WINTER

BY ROBERT DENNIS

There sure is a lot happening at RID and Recording Engineer's Quarterly for the new year.  This year we see the launch of new programs at RID, including more extensive web training throughout 1999.  We are joined by industry giants contributing to the REQ site and to the online training programs of RID.
Tom Gelardi, an award-winning record promoter, is both writing and posting an audio magazine about record promotions and marketing.  These writings and postings directly help our students enrolled in our Doing Music Business course and our Internet Promotions and Marketing course.  The lead article, MUSIC MARKETING & PROMOTIONS, announces Tom Gelardi's written and audio columns during 1999.
The Recording Institute of Detroit has established a relationship with a national record company, the Holland Group of Hollywood, California.  Mr. Ron Dunbar, Executive Administrator of the Holland Group has agreed to evaluate local records that successfully test market and are released by graduates of RID's Recording Engineer/Producer Program.  "It's an edge RID graduates have while attempting to break into the field; often it takes newcomers years to develop these kinds of direct communication lines to the industry."
Our MICHIGAN MUSIC column announces the formation of RAMM, the Recording Artists and Musicians of Michigan that will provide all sorts of seminars and services for struggling recording artists of Michigan.  RID is one of the founding members of RAMM. Recording Engineer's Quarterly will be hosting the RAMM Website.
RID is adding a midnight shift to its training to accommodate out of town "distance" students wishing to get final certification after participating in on line study.  The school is installing $30,000 worth of Tascam digital consoles to allow every student individual hands-on exposure to the latest digital technologies.   Our THE MUSIC & RECORDING INDUSTRY column this month details the changes of RID facility and approach for 1999-2000.
Our Recording Techniques column reviews a brand-new vocal microphone in IT SHURE IS A GOOD MIC and provides links to on vocal microphone placement techniques.
I will be out of town on the publication date of this issue (January 25).  Additional articles that make the publication date will be posted mid-February.  We will also post an article on the NAMM convention in LA.
What about cold weather and what about the humor? - Check out this month's posting.
