September 2000 - Tip 1

For September, 2000 we are continuing on the subject of using the VU Meter in recording, mixing and production.

PRODUCTION BY METERS - PART 7

Your Best Compressor for Zero Dollars

BY ROBERT DENNIS

POST DATE 9/17/2000

In the days of analog recording we were always very conscience of the tape noise.  When we did vocal overdubs, we looked at VU meters to make sure that the vocal was recorded as high as possible to keep it away from the noise.
We would be aware of the highest reading on the meter for every phrase that the singer sung.  The vocal phrases are separated by short pauses - they are one line of song lyrics long.  We would want every phrase to have the same highest reading on the recording.  If one phrase was more than 2 dB low - it would become noticeably more noisy.  You will hear that noise if, after recording (say during mixdown), you raised that phrase.
