For August 2000 we are examining how recording engineering relates to music production.  Many times the engineering skills that allow a person to operate recording gear can be used by the producer to "direct" the musicians that are recording the song.   -ed.

When you are producing a band, there will be indications on the meter that can tell you if you have the best performance.  Its not that you "trust" the meters more than your ears, its just another tool that a producer can use to get the best performance recorded and to verify that he or she really has the best performance.  "Tricks" like we are talking about is what makes recording engineering skills very valuable to the music producer.
When doing a sound check, the recording engineer directs the musician to play something like the part that is going to be played on the tune.  The recording engineer also asks that the musician play the part that has the loudest volume and to play it at full level.
