IN TUNE WITH KEVIN MEISEL

Kevin's fist release was recorded by Recording Institute of Detroit students and graduates.  Dedicated to expressing oneself with music is what it's all about, and Kevin is a good example of a musician dedicated to his music.  We are happy to post this article by PT Quinn about Kevin Meisel, an important part of Michigan Music.

Belleville guitarist and songwriter Kevin Meisel is a gentle soul with a conscience. Coal and Diamonds, his well-received 1998 debut CD, includes titles like "Red Moshannon," telling the story of Appalachian coal miners caught in a moral quagmire as the EPA shut down a strip mining operation at the expense of the only life many of them had ever known.  It's a recurring theme Meisel explores about the duality of the humanities. "I saw an article in a magazine that detailed the conflict between coal miners and the EPA, and how torn some of the miners were because they were lovers of the very land the industry was pillaging," explains Meisel. "The polarity of our existence as human beings is at the heart of probably every song I write. I don't think I'll ever tire of it."  This is the kind of introspection Kevin invests in his country folk rock-telling a story that needs to be told.

"The polarity of our existence as human beings is at the heart of probably every song I write."

Now Meisel is wrapping up a new record to be called Country Lines. "I'm looking forward to the new record because the legendary Brian Lillie is producing it at the Big Sky recording studio in Ann Arbor. Brian has taken what matters to me and blossomed it into a sonically beautiful record. We brought in 35 musicians to work on it-and it has some upbeat rock 'n' roll that's radio-friendly."

Meisel's current lineup includes violinist Liz Auchinvole from The Original Brothers & Sisters of Love, along with Ken Pope on drums and Kevin's brother Keith on bass. Keith is a former RID student, and about that Kevin says: "I used to hang out at RID when my brother took lessons, and Bob Dennis taught me a lot about the recording techniques I used on my first record at my home studio in Belleville." So after a bit of a hiatus, Meisel is once again on track with his new projects lucky for his growing legion of fans. His brand of music is infectious and a whole lotta fun. We'll keep you posted.
