ANN ARBOR - STILL A HOT SPOT IN MUSIC

Big Brother & The Holding Company is a world famous band, probably because of it's lead singer in the 60's, a vocalist named Janus Joplin.  The guy that "hired" Janus as Big Brother's singer is the original guitar player from the group, James Gurley.   Throughout the late 80's and early 90's James recorded several projects with his friend Muruga Booker, Including a hit release in Japan called "Rock The Planet."
Two issues ago we had an article called WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO MURUGA?In that issue we reported Muruga's move back to the Detroit area.  Since that time Muruga has bought a house and Bob Dennis is designing a project studio that is planned for his garage.
It was a Tuesday evening and Muruga planned a recording session with his new group.  The group contains Ken, a Zen drummer (who doubles on different woodwind instruments), Owen, an electric violinist, Dan, a bassest and Muruga on trap drums and doing Nanda Drum parts on some songs. Tentatively the group is called "Global Village" [Band] Tonight his group would be recording with a couple of guests, Madcat Ruth (a renowned harmonica player of Brubeck Generation fame) and James Gurley (of Big Brother fame).
I arrived late, being held up at the school and the group was already recording at 8:15.  As soon as the take was done I had a change to re-adjust a couple of microphones, get some new levels and actually be behind the board for the last two tunes.  It's a little rough right now with the musicians in the basement and mic lines running up to a first floor bedroom that has the console and ADAT.  Right now we're limited to 8 tracks and will have 16 track capabilities as soon as the project studio is complete.
It was refreshing as heck to hear world-class musicians performing in the basement.  Interesting that rock legends take a vacation in Ann Arbor and include doing some basement recording as part of the "fun" of the trip.
