FROM THE EDITOR

it's new year and it's new things

We start the year with a brand new picture of how I actually look right now.  It's the second anniversary of when REQ showcased a new web training package called Alexander Magazine.  We now get to announce a new service involving web study and theory certification by Recording Institute of Detroit for the down-to-earth price of $69.95.  In our feature article this issue I give you the ins and outs, the hows and whys, plus the pro's and cons about learning recording technology with this service.
I'm really excited about the training we deliver, both through the Recording Institute of Detroit's campus programs and over the Web.   It's all about your recording education, which is our #1 concern.  I elaborate in my article, "Give Me 5 Weeks And I'll Give You A Lifetime."
We're doing things a little differently this year and we are trying to get more articles for you to read.  Ih addition to the regular articles for this issue, we are posting the technical articles from the Christmas Alexander Magazine issue.  Throughout 2002, you can expect more "subscriber only" articles from Alexander Magazine, increasing the number of articles you can access.  Make it a point to subscribe to Recording Engineer's Quarterly to gain access to all of the articles we link to - it's free.
For the next few months, you will will be seeing a reoccurring theme of music marketing and promotions, as Tom Gelardi writes new text materials for RID Recording Engineer/Producer program updates.  In the Alexander Magazine Christmas issue, he wrote a definitive article on getting started in marketing your music to the masses called The Right Steps On The Road To a Hit.  I follow that with a review article on music screening and submissions services in this issue.  Are they useful and can they get you a a national recording contract?  I answer these and other questions in my article, called Screening and Submitting?
In The Michigan Music feature this month we update you on an immerging recording center in Saginaw Michigan at Dick Wagner's Downtown Digital Studios.  New control rooms are being constructed to handle an inflow of rap and hip hop music business into a studio known for Frost rock and roll. The Home Recording feature this month is on the basics of digital recording by Ken Lanyon.  I Added a companion article called "The Basics of Bits and Samples,"  Our basic lesson form Alexander Magazine this issue is on fundamental and harmonic frequencies.
